It was another powerful day of conversations about book publishing in the province on Alberta Book Day in the concourse of the Federal Building. Honourable Leela Aheer, Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women joined the celebration. In her speech she underscored how the book publishing industry has a significant economic impact, creating jobs and supporting local business.
18 publishers came from across the province to showcase their books to the hundreds of people who came through to see the books and talk about our work. Those fortunate enough to attend were given two tickets and were able to exchange them for any two books of their choice. UAlberta Press gave away almost 100 books, showing the range of our publishing program.
During the course of the day, we did a number of tweets about our recent publications that started with the phrase, “Alberta is…”. Check out #ABBookDay to see how books reflect our province and our communities.
We want to thank Minister Aheer, both for her support of Alberta Book Day and for her electrifying speech about the place of books in the cultural landscape of our province. The day closed with publishers being acknowledged by members of the legislative assembly—being in the Visitor’s Gallery is always a remarkable experience!
Thanks also to our colleagues who staffed the display: Douglas Hildebrand, Alan Brownoff, Cathie Crooks, and Tanvi Mohile.
